The Rural Civic Arts Learning Lab was a pilot program designed by Department of Public Transformation (DoPT) in partnership with the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council (SMAC). The Rural Civic Arts Learning Lab was a six-month workshop series and peer network for rural community leaders to develop creative strategies for community and civic engagement. This report shares the goals and impacts of the program, case studies on the selected communities, reflections and learnings from participants, and anticipated next steps—including the launch of DoPT’s Engage Rural program.
Grounded in impact-based evidence, this report illustrates the value of working with artists and invites curious city staff, community organizations, and funders to explore creative strategies for civic engagement.
