Artist residencies have long offered time away to focus on creative work—but what artists need from that time is changing. This workshop features leaders who are rethinking what it means to support artists today. Instead of following traditional models that expect a finished product or long resumes, these programs focus on giving artists space—literally and figuratively—to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with their work. Whether located deep in the woods or in the middle of a quiet town, each residency is shaped by its setting, its people, and a commitment to care.
Panelists talk about how their programs have evolved, the tradeoffs they’ve made between public engagement and personal retreat, and the questions they’re still asking. Expect practical insights and honest reflections about what’s working, what’s hard, and what really matters when building a residency for today’s artists.
What does it take to run a residency that prioritizes rest, reflection, and process over output? We shared lessons about everything from simplifying applications to finding the right balance between solitude and public engagement. Whether you’re an artist, administrator, or simply curious, this session offers a closer look at how residencies are evolving—and why that matters.

We are committed to making visible the undercurrents and overtures of the working world around us. Our projects live at the intersection of creative production and social engagement, building futures from neighbor-to-neighbor dialogue, civic sharing, and bright-eyed perspectives.
